| Syngenta Develops Ontario’s First Relative Maturity Map for Soybeans |
|
Syngenta Seeds Canada's agronomic research demonstrates that it's Relative Maturity (RM), not the traditional Crop Heat Units, that helps to make better informed decisions on which variety is best for Ontario growers. NK® Seeds has developed the first draft of an Ontario Relative Maturity map for soybeans it hopes will change the way soybean maturity is measured in Ontario.
"Our research shows the traditional method of selecting soybean varieties based on Crop Heat Units isn't optimal," says Dave Townsend, Crop Manager for Syngenta Seeds Canada. "I believe Crop Heat Units play a minor part in soybean maturity; it's latitude and sunlight that are the stronger drivers. In future, we think using an RM map will allow growers to make more informed choices on the soybean variety they grow, which in turn should give better results."
For soybeans, flowering and maturity are crucial turning points in the crop. It's well known that June 21st, the longest day of the year triggers flowering.
"Flowering and maturity aren't triggered by heat like people might think," says Townsend. "It's really triggered by the plants' reaction to the number of hours and intensity of sunlight," making an RM map even more valuable. "Soybeans react to day length. As we move into September and the day length shrinks, maturity kicks into place. If a grower knows the RM of their farm, it could help them select the best soybean for their field."
